Battery Ejection Test Machine

Model:LSK-PS

Used for projectile (ejection) testing of lithium batteries and battery packs, as well as residential and commercial batteries, in accordance with UL 1642 (2006) and UL 2054 (1999). The projectile test apparatus features an explosion-protection (blast-containment) design to prevent the explosion or fragments of the test battery from endangering personnel and equipment.

Product Overview

Application & Applicable Standards (Battery Projectile Test Machine):
Used for projectile (ejection) testing of lithium batteries and battery packs, as well as residential and commercial batteries, in accordance with UL 1642:2006 and UL 2054:1999.

Test Requirements

  1. Place each test cell or battery pack on a flat wire mesh screen. The screen shall cover a center opening of Ø102 mm (4 in.) in the test platform. The wire mesh shall be made of Ø0.43 mm (0.017 in.) steel wire with a spacing of 20 mesh/in.

  2. The wire mesh shall be installed 38 mm (1.5 in.) above the burner. The fuel and air flow rates shall be adjusted to produce a bright blue flame that heats the mesh until it glows red-hot.

  3. The specimen shall be covered by an octagonal metal wire screen enclosure located above it, measuring 610 mm (2 ft) in width and 305 mm (1 ft) in height. The enclosure shall be made of Ø0.25 mm (0.01 in.) aluminum wire woven at 16–18 wires/in. in both directions.

  4. Heat the specimen until ignition occurs and it is fully consumed. No restraint is required unless the test sample is likely to fall off the mesh during the test. If needed, secure the sample to the mesh with a single thin wire.

  5. During the test, no projectile fragments from the test cell or battery pack shall pass through the wire mesh screen.

  6. The schematic diagram of the test setup is as shown in: Projectile.jpg

Main Functions

  1. The projectile test apparatus shall have a blast-containment (explosion-isolation) function to prevent battery fragments from endangering personnel and equipment.

  2. The test flame may be manually pre-adjusted, but the apparatus shall be equipped with a remote ignition control function. It shall also have flame-out protection.

  3. The apparatus shall have a forced exhaust system capable of rapidly extracting and discharging smoke and dust generated by battery explosion to a designated outlet.

General Requirements

  1. The overall structural dimensions of the projectile test apparatus shall meet the requirements specified in Clause 1.2 of this specification.

  2. The apparatus shall include a second-layer blast-containment cover to isolate any battery explosion occurring within the wire screen enclosure from the external environment. The second-layer cover shall be equipped with a bullet-resistant glass viewing window.

  3. The second-layer blast-containment cover shall provide an exhaust function. By activating the forced exhaust ducting, hazardous smoke and dust shall be discharged to a designated outlet.

  4. The cabinet color of the free-fall test stand shall be as agreed by both parties (or as specified by the purchaser via a color sample).

Control Requirements

  1. The projectile test apparatus shall adopt a combination of remote and local control.

    • Remote control: automatic ignition, audible/visual alarm, automatic and/or manual forced exhaust.

    • Local control: manual pre-adjustment of the flame.

    • Sample placement shall be performed manually.

  2. Before each test and prior to placing the sample, the operator shall complete the flame pre-adjustment locally. After adjustment, wait for the mesh to cool, place the sample, then start remote ignition control. The system shall automatically open the gas solenoid valve and ignite; the test begins.

  3. The forced exhaust function shall be remotely controllable and capable of rapidly discharging smoke and dust generated by battery explosion to a designated outlet.
